Crete - Area guide
Crete is the most populous island in Greece, as well as the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. It has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, excellent services, delectable cuisine and an intriguing history! Crete is divided into four prefectures and offers many things to see and do.
Chania is a charming city, with two distinct towns divided by an ancient town and a modern town. The old town is centred on the Venetian port, which contains beautiful buildings and narrow streets full of small shops, cafes and restaurants. The lighthouse in the port, as well as the famous Agora market, are both worth a visit. There are many things to see outside the metropolis. The Samaria Gorge and the Cretan National Park are two examples. Palaiochora, with its characteristic pink sand, is another.
Rethymnon is a seaside town on Crete between Chania and Heraklion. Rethymno is one of the most attractive places on Crete, with a Venetian port and a massive fortification. There is also a large sandy beach in the middle of the town, and it is a lively community throughout the year due to the University of Crete campus.
Heraklion is the largest city in Crete and the capital of the island.
It is one of the most populated areas of the island. The ancient city of Heraklion plays an important role in the history of Greece. Many people visit Greece to see the Palace of Knossos, which is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful palaces in Greece. There are many things to do and see in this area, which is about 20-25 minutes from the city centre. The Cretaquarium is a state of the art aquarium and research centre, excellent for families. The Crete Natural History Museum displays everything from dinosaur bones to stuffed animals. The Venetian fortress of Koules, which stands on the harbour walls, is also worth a visit.
Lasithi is the least mountainous part of Crete. It is the most urban area of Crete and therefore has a more relaxed atmosphere. The province is also notable for its beautiful town of Agios Nikolaos. Lasithi is also popular with tourists who want to have a thrill. It is a great place for adventure, with 18 gorges to explore, popular windsurfing beaches and several diving sites.
