Hydra - Area guide
Hydra, the most famous island in the Argo-Saronic Gulf, is a small paradise that can be reached from Athens, a favourite weekend getaway for many Athenians.
The picturesque old town of Hydra is built amphitheatrically on the rocky slopes around the harbour. Hydra's fleet has a long history of service in the Aegean, and its owners have been among the wealthiest people in Greece since antiquity.
They imitated the Venetian palaces and built their houses, which today offer a breathtaking view. The historic port of Hydra is now crowded with yachts, colourful cafes, pretty tavernas and restaurants, which are surrounded by these beautiful old houses.
Kaminia, a tiny isolated fishermen's hamlet, Vlychos, a beautiful crimson pebble beach, and Mandraki, the island's most famous sandy beach, are among the most beautiful beaches on Hydra.
